(21days+) Cape Town to Windhoek

An inspiring, impressing and amazing journey from Cape Town through Namaqualand to the Gariep River, the Great Kalahari into Namibia, covering Fish River Canyon, Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert, Damaraland, Kaokoveld, Wildlife in Etosha Pan National Park and Windhoek.

No activities on our itineraries are compulsory.

 
Day 1 - Cape Town (B&B)  
After a brief tour introduction and a last look at Table Mountain across the bay, we depart from Cape Town for the Stellenbosch Winelands where a bottle or two of the best South African wine can be bought. Overnight at a B & B.  
Day 2 - Namaqualand [Camping BLD]  
During July and August the Namaqualand is a splendour of wildflowers. The rest of the year the area is beautiful and unspoilt.  
Day 3 - Augrabies (Gariep River) [Camping BLD]  
We arrive late afternoon and do another wine route, where everyone will receive a unique holder of Desert Wine. We camp at Khamkiri on the banks of the mighty Gariep River.  
Day 4 - Augrabies (River rafting and National Park) [Camping BLD]  
River rafting on canoes into the Augrabies National Park. Afternoon game drive in an open game vehicle. Free time for swimming and relaxing on Khamkirri's wooden deck on the banks of the river.  
Day 5 - Kgalagadi Trans Frontier Park [Camping BLD]  
We camp at the Botswana side of the Park at Rooiputs. The camping ground is situated some 25km up the Nossob River Valley from Two Rivers entrance gate. It offers six individual camp sites, each with its own shade structure, fireplace, toilet and cold water shower.  
Day 6 - Kgalagadi Trans Frontier Park [Camping BLD]  
You will experience a sense of solitude and freedom in the wilderness. The trail passes through areas of tall grass, dunes and various pans. Kalahari wildlife can be seen in varying concentrations and lions may explore camps at night.  
Day 7 - Fishriver Canyon [Camping BLD]  
At dawn we leave for Namibia and head for the Canyon, the second largest gorge in Africa. The fittest among us can hike to the canyon floor. We set up camp at Canyon Roadhouse where a pleasant ambiance, swimming pool, gorgeous bar and clean ablution facilities awaits us.  
Day 8 - Duwisib Castle [Camping BLD]  
A visit at this castle is a visit back in time. This spectacular castle was finally finished in 1909 and there are a lot of tales to tell about the people involved in the building of the castle, some personally known to us.  
Day 9 - Sesriem Canyon [Camping BLD]  
We arrive at Sossusvlei in the late afternoon, set up camp and go off to explore the Sesriem Canyon. If there is water in the ravine, we can take a swim.  
Day 10 - Sossusvlei [Camping BLD]  
Long before dawn we leave camp for the magnificent red dunes and the most breathtaking views you will ever experience. While the sun is rising, a splendour of colours will be coming alive before your eyes. For the fittest among us, dune climbing is a wonderful experience. Breakfast and lunch in the dunes. Then we depart for camp, pack our camping gear and leave for Solitaire. Another peaceful desert night with only the sound of geckos and perhaps a lonely jackall calling his mate.  
Day 11 - 12 Swakopmund [B&B]  
After breakfast, we travel to Swakopmund via the Gaub Pass and the famous Kuiseb Canyon. We book at a B & B for two days. We have an excursion on the magnificent dunes of the Namib while quadbiking. Back in Swakopmund the night is yours to explore. Another day dawn with the opportunity to explore this quint German town with its beaches, markets, curios and many more. Dinner for our expense is at 8pm at Kukis Pub.  
Day 13 - Twyfelfontein [Camping BLD]  
At Twyfelfontein we visit the Burnt Mountain, see some of the Rock Engravings and listen to the Organ Pipes.  
Day 14 - Palmwag [Camping BLD]  
We cross the mountains into the wilderness and camp at Palmwag. Relax at the swimming pool under the shady palm trees and revive your spirits. An early morning game drive (approx 3 hours) and then we leave for Fort Sesfontein.  
Day 15 - Opuwo [Camping BLD]  
Continuing through the Kaokoveld to Opuwu, the home of the Himba people - a proud and semi-nomadic tribe. If you have not yet seen the striking Himba women, Opuwu is where you will find them!  
Day 16 - Etanga [Camping BLD]  
Enjoying the drive through the Kaokoveld and camp wild with no facilities. We take our own water for washing and drinking. Wild camping is a true wilderness experience and can be very enjoyable.  
Day 17 - Epupa Falls [Camping BLD]  
As we approach Epupa Falls on the Kunene River, the hills of Angola become visible. Epupa ia an appropriate Herero name, describing the sound of falling water of the twelve small waterfalls which converge and plunge over the black rocks into the deep gorge of the Kunene River. This is a wonderful place to relax and to watch the bird-life.  
Day 18 - Kunene [Camping BLD]  
On the banks of the Kunene River, 100km east of Epupa Falls, is the rustic Kunene River Lodge with campsites, bar pool, shop and many activities from mountain biking to sundowner cruises (own expense).  
Day 19 - Etosha [Camping BLD]  
Today we enter the Etosha National Park for an incredible wildlife experience. For the next 2 days we wil take game drives and camp where the biggest concentration of animals is situated.  
Day 20 - Etosha [Camping BLD]  
Still in Etosha! At all three camps, Namutoni, Okaukuejo and Halali you can take a swim in the swimming pools and from sunset to late in the night the group can watch animals drink at the floodlit waterholes.  
Day 21 - Windhoek [B&B]  
Windhoek City Centre is characterised by German style buildings such as the Alte Feste (old fort), Chrituskirche and Tintenpalast (parliament buildings). The charm of the city of Windhoek lies in its harmonious blend of African and Europian cultures and the friendliness of its people. We visit this cosmopolitan capital and enjoy a meal at the famous Joe's Beerhouse (own expense). Tour ends after breakfast.
